Part II: American Soil, Chinese Heritage
American Soil, Chinese Heritage explores my upbringing as an Asian American. This piece uses vivid textures and colors to highlight the exuberant culture I embody. In this depicted moment, my father lifts me in his arms; he guides my wrist to a lion head, brushing my tiny hand against the great relic of culture. I had investigated old photographs taken by my mother, who had captured moments of my father teaching me new things. Here, my father was cultivating my appreciation for the beauties of our heritage.
I created a blurry texture for people in the background to convey the motion during this festivity, and also to highlight the central scene of my father and I with the lion. I chose bright colors to spotlight the lion head and worked to capture its various textures. The combination of these colors and textures allowed me to develop my skills in drawing silk, fabrics, and clothing.
